What the numbers show

This list ranks 15 places by the price of one litre of petrol, also called gasoline. The prices are national averages for 19 October 2026, shown in US dollars and in each place's own money. The cheapest place on the list, Portugal, charges $2.36 a litre. The world average on the same date is $1.47. So even the 15th most expensive place on the list pays more than the world average.

Three places charge more than $3 a litre. Malawi charges $3.23, or 5,619 Malawian kwacha. Norway charges $3.12, or 29.36 Norwegian krone. The third is the most expensive place on the list, and it sits well above the other two.

Most of the rest are in Europe. Denmark charges $2.81 (18.66 Danish krone), the Netherlands $2.74 (2.44 euros), Finland $2.62 (2.33 euros), Switzerland $2.60 (2.15 Swiss francs) and Liechtenstein $2.57 (2.12 Swiss francs). Israel charges $2.60 (8.03 shekels) and Singapore $2.49 (3.18 Singapore dollars). Greece, France, Germany, Monaco and Portugal sit between $2.36 and $2.46, at between 2.10 and 2.19 euros.

The prices come from GlobalPetrolPrices.com, a private company that collects national average pump prices. It is one source, so treat the list as an estimate. It converts local prices to dollars at the exchange rate of the day, so the dollar figures move with currencies as well as with fuel. The grade is octane 95 where it is sold. One place on the list does not sell it, so its price is for premium petrol, octane 98, which costs more. That makes its place less like for like.

Other sources do not agree exactly. The European Commission's Weekly Oil Bulletin for 12 October 2026 gives €2.658 a litre for Denmark, €2.462 for the Netherlands and €2.319 for Finland. It gives €2.214 for Germany, €2.212 for France, €2.199 for Greece and €2.110 for Portugal. Those are close to the list but not the same, and Germany, France and Greece swap places. So treat the order of the closely bunched countries as approximate.

To read the list, compare each dollar price with what you pay at home, and use the local price to see the figure in the money people there actually spend. Prices are for one week in October 2026 and can change by the next update.
