Donut
How to read it
Each arc is a share of the whole, and the whole is 100%. Compare arcs against the ring rather than against each other.
Best for
Parts of a whole, when there are few enough slices to tell apart.
When not to use it
There are more than about five slices, or several sit close in size — angles are read poorly and small differences vanish.
The common mistake
Using one where the parts do not sum to a meaningful total, so the ring implies a whole that does not exist.
Example data
Where does the world's coffee come from?
Share of global coffee production by country
The sample dataset this format ships with, drawn the way the site draws every clip's numbers — hover, sort or step through it. Figures as given by its source line: FAO, FAOSTAT green coffee production.
