Waffle
How to read it
One hundred squares, one percent each. Count squares. Each group fills in turn and the one the story is about arrives last; a before-and-after version flips the squares that changed hands.
Best for
Percentages you want read as counts of people or things rather than as an area.
When not to use it
The figure is not really out of a hundred, or there are more than about six groups.
The common mistake
Using it for a percentage of an abstract quantity. The grid implies countable things, so it works for people and fails for money.
Example data

Where they'd live, by region
The sample dataset this format ships with, drawn the way the site draws every clip's numbers — hover, sort or step through it. Figures as given by its source line: Illustrative: rounded regional population estimates.
