How to read this chart: Beam length is the value; the scoreboard over the globe lists every country in rank order with its exact figure, the top spot sealed until the reveal. On the live chart, drag to spin the globe. More on globe 3d charts.
India and China alone hold 35% of the world's people.
The data
The clip shows one moment. This is how it got there: Population, total, 1986–2025, from World Bank.

How we counted (an estimate)
How we counted: World Bank population estimates for 2025, built mostly from UN World Population Prospects and national statistics. Shares divide each total by the world's 8.22 billion people; the other countries together hold the remaining 43%. Counts differ slightly by publisher: for 2023, UN estimates via Our World in Data also put the same ten countries at 57% of the world.

The ten biggest countries hold 57% of the world's people. The planet has 8.22 billion people in total, so every other country in the world shares the remaining 43%. The two biggest countries alone hold 35% of everyone on Earth. These are World Bank population estimates for 2025, read in October 2026.
Below the top two, the gap is still wide. The United States has 342 million people, Indonesia 286 million, Pakistan 255 million, Nigeria 238 million, Brazil 213 million and Bangladesh 176 million. Russia has 144 million and Ethiopia 135 million, which completes the ten biggest. The largest country has more than four times as many people as the United States. Even within the ten the spread is wide: Ethiopia, the smallest of them, has less than a tenth as many people as the largest.
The numbers are estimates. The World Bank builds its population series mostly from the UN World Population Prospects and national statistics. Publishers count slightly differently, and a total can move a little from one source to another. A check with UN estimates for 2023, published through Our World in Data, shows the same ten countries holding 57% of the world.
To compare countries fairly, look at shares rather than ranks. A country's place can change when a neighbour passes it, but a share moves slowly. That is why the idea that a handful of countries hold most of humanity stays true even as the order shifts. A share also says more than a raw total: 35% for two countries is a different story from 35% spread across twenty.
The globe in the clip visits the ten countries from the smallest to the largest, and the scoreboard keeps every figure on screen. Population figures get revised as new surveys and censuses arrive, so the numbers here are right as of October 2026 and a newer release may differ slightly.
